S2E5.10 Exploring Plants on Spindles with Amelia Garripoli
S2E5: Spinning Flax and Hemp
•
24m
Amelia talks about playing with new fibers (in this case, several different plan fibers) on spindles. She starts with looking at your fiber, thinking about the yarn you want, and then using that information to help choose a spindle. She moves on with a quick lesson on how to spin a leader, starting a cop, and parking and drafting to get used to a new fiber. After that she teaches us how to take what the fibers and yarns are telling us to decide spindle type, spindle weight, twist amounts, and spinning thicker and thinner. In this exploratory segment Amelia also covers using a cotton join/rescue join when there are no draft-able fibers remaining.
Spindles used: Suspended spindle, Turkish/cross-arm,
Fibers covered: Flax, hemp, banana, ramie, Tencel
