S1E13: Measure, technical and intuitive

Whether it's to talk about yarn, recreate yarns, record data about yarns, or just to understand yarn and spinning better, measuring is key. This episode covers all the things you could and would want to measure and all the ways to do it. We start with WPI, then TPI (for single and ply), twist angle, grist, and then end with non-mathy, non-technical intuitive measuring. The episodes includes Jacey, Jillian Moreno, and Michelle Boyd and each bring their own style of teaching and talking about spinning. The episode ends with a MAY with Jillian Moreno and a teacher tea where Jacey gets to sit with Michelle Boyd and chat about spinning, yarn, and life.

S1E13: Measure, technical and intuitive
  • S1E13.1 - Measuring: intro

Jacey welcomes you to episode 13, tells you what's in store, and chats a bit.

  • S1E13.2 - Measure: WPI

WPI is a quick, easy, and imperfect way to measure yarn. Jacey walks you through how to do it, how not to do it, what it can tell you, and what it can't.

  • S1E13.3 - Measure: TPI at the table

Twist per inch can tell us so much about yarns but as spinners, we often only take half the measurement and therefore know only half the story. In this episode Jacey explains what TPI is, how to measure it, and why it's important to measure the twist in your singles as well as in your ply! And if...

  • S1E13.4 - Measure: TPI at the wheel

How can you use TPI at the wheel to change your yarn and create the yarn you want? Michelle Boyd sits down at her wheel and talks us through what TPI is, how we can use it and Mable Ross' famous formula to systematically change our yarns. And if you've ever wondered about that formula, how to und...

  • S1E13.5 - Measuring: What is twist angle?

What's twist angle and why do you care? Michelle Boyd joins us to answer those questions and more.

  • S1E13.6 - Measure: Measuring twist angle

Find it hard to get a good twist angle measurement? Jacey's here to demystify the process, talk about how multiply plies affect twist angle, and how the S- and Z-twist angles relate to each other.

  • S1E13.7 - Measure: Grist

Grist is just about the best measurement you can take of a yarn. It tells you how the length and weight of a yarn relate to each other as yards per pound (YPP). If you're only going to take one measurement, grist might be the best one to choose. Jillian Moreno explains why it's so awesome, how t...

  • S1E13.8 - Measure: Intuitively

Technical measuring not for you? Not interested in taking the TPI, WPI, twist angle, and grist? Jillian Moreno talks measuring for the intuitive spinner in this segment. A guide to gathering the bare basics and going from there!

  • S1E13.9 - Make a yarn (MAY) with intuitive measuring

Join Jillian Moreno making a yarn and measuring it intuitively.

  • S1E13.10 - Teacher Tea with Michelle Boyd

Join Jacey as she talks to technical spinner Michelle Boyd about yarn, spinning, and life.
